Things I'm Ghosting as a Neurospicy Therapist
Last week’s post was both dense and intense, so here’s a short Halloween-inspired listicle for y’all.
5 Things I'm Officially Ghosting as a Neurospicy Therapist
The idea that rest has to be earned
Rest is a fundamental human need, and you don’t need to hit a certain level of exhaustion before you’re allowed to take your break. It’s not a reward for getting through your to-do list and, given that that list has this funny way of never ending, waiting until everything is crossed off is a good way to never rest at all.
Calling yourself lazy when you’re actually overwhelmed
There are so many things that could be standing between you and the thing you’re stuck on: executive dysfunction, burnout, anxiety, overwhelm… Deciding that you’re “just being lazy” doesn’t help figure out what’s actually going on, and it definitely doesn’t make the task in front of you any easier.
The idea that healing means forgiving everyone who hurt you
You can process what has happened and what has been done to you, and move forward in building your life without deciding that someone deserves your forgiveness. AND you can forgive someone and still want nothing to do with them. Your healing should involve exactly who you want involved.
Treating every coping mechanism like a bad habit that needs fixing
Coping mechanisms can be unglamorous and can seem weird from the outside. But they’re not automatically “bad” or harmful. We learn to manage situations with the tools available to us at the time. Yes, it can be worthwhile to think about whether those tools are still serving us, but we don’t need to shame ourselves for using them in the first place.
Turning your healing journey into another productivity project
You can heal, build your life, and enjoy your life without turning that into a self-improvement productivity project. Your self-reflective poetry doesn’t have to be the start of your first published book or the final draft of your spoken-word debut. And this healing sure as heck doesn’t need to be for the sake of your future capitalist gains or ability to perform labour.
You don’t have to fix every part of yourself to deserve a life that feels good. Consider this your permission to leave some things on read.
Happy Halloween!!!!
